Tony Pennock optimistic as Haverfordwest County prepares for crucial Europa Qualifier

HAVERFORDWEST County Manager, Tony Pennock, is optimistic about his team’s chances as they prepare for the second leg of their Uefa Europa Conference League qualifier against North Macedonian side KF Shkendija. After a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg, Pennock is urging his players to back themselves in the upcoming match at Cardiff City Stadium this evening ( July 20).

“I would have taken that before the game definitely, (Shkendija) are an excellent team and a full-time club, who have been in Europe 11 times in the last 12 years,” said Pennock, acknowledging the tough challenge they faced. However, he expressed his delight in the team’s performance, stating, “They should be extremely proud of themselves, because I am, the staff are, and I’m sure the supporters who traveled out here are as well.”

Reflecting on the first leg, Pennock highlighted the team’s improvement as the game progressed. “As the game went on we started to believe in ourselves and kept the ball better, which was always going to be key,” he said. He praised the team’s ability to cope with Shkendija’s attacking threat and emphasized the importance of staying focused and seizing opportunities in the home leg.

“I thought we coped with that quite well, they had a few chances, but in the main I am extremely pleased with the lads,” said Pennock, crediting the team’s resilience and ability to create chances even after conceding early in the second half.

Looking ahead to the return match in Cardiff, Pennock acknowledged the significance of the home advantage and the support from the fans. “Cardiff City’s pitch is going to be better than tonight, but that will suit them as well,” he noted. He expressed hope for a strong turnout from the fans and encouraged the players to capitalize on their chances to turn the tie in their favor.

The Haverfordwest manager also expressed gratitude to the visiting supporters who made the journey to North Macedonia, stating, “All of us are so grateful to those who made the trip.” He appreciated their dedication in witnessing the team’s European campaign and looked forward to their presence in the home leg, hoping for a memorable occasion for the club.
