SOUTH Pembrokeshire Golf Club are offering six free group lessons for those who are either interested in learning how to play golf or returning to the game.
The New2 Golf programme funded by Wales Golf has proved very successful, so much so that Annie, who had never hit a ball before New2Golf, managed to get a hole in one shortly after learning to play.
The lessons with a professional golfer will take place starting on Monday the 5th June. If participants enjoy the first six lessons, there will be the opportunity to progress to a further six lessons and discounted membership for the remainder of the year.
Annie said: “I had never hit a golf ball until I enrolled on the New2Golf Programme. For the past 4 years I have been playing golf at South Pembrokeshire Golf Club, as a result of participating in the fantastic new2 golf scheme.
“About 20 yrs ago I was having lunch with my great friend and colleague and we joked about how when we retire “We’ll Play Golf !” Neither of us having any intention of doing it as work was always so busy.
“In 2019 three separate girls I knew, and who were members of SPGC sent me the link for new2golf. It was such a good deal and I was vaguely interested, so I rang the club secretary for more information and duly joined the evening classes.
“On the fourth lesson the pro instructor told us we could bring our clubs the following week, well I did not have any and clubs, they can be expensive !!
“Facebook marketplace came to the rescue, a lady with arthritic knees who could no longer play was selling clubs, a bag, trolley, balls, my size golf shoes all for £40, a real bargain, so I was sorted.
“There are four of us who started new2 golf lessons at the same time, we play in the ladies section both socially and in some competitions, it is such a sociable sport and we have such a lot of fun.
“Last year we joined a club golf trip to Spain. It was fantastic, great golf,fun in the sun with a lovely group of people. We all enjoyed it so much we are off to El Rompido again this November.
“South Pembrokeshire is a fabulous 18 hole course with stunning views over the Haven. Golf gives fresh air, great exercise, good for physical and mental well being. Sometimes you can hit a cracking shot which makes up for the duffers!
“The ladies section usually play and have lunch on a Wednesday, they are a lovely, friendly, supportive, encouraging group who enjoy a good laugh.
“On 28th August 2021 I got a Hole in One on the 9th hole. I was so amazed and it’s a fantastic feeling, fortunately the club house was very quiet that day so my bill for drinks was small.
“For me golf has been a revelation and changed my life. It is addictive, every round is different and you are trying to improve on your own performance.
“Eight years ago I had a hip replacement. By then I could hardly walk so to be able to play 18 holes is incredible.
“Give it a go and you too could be hooked, I giggle to myself every time I do up my shoes as I cannot believe I enjoy it so much.
“My best friend and I still laugh about our 20 year old lunchtime conversation and here we are retired and playing golf on a beautiful course and enjoying every minute.
