PEMBROKESHIRE’S very own soprano, Jessica Robinson, captivated audiences with her remarkable performance at the esteemed Cardiff Singer of the World competition. In a sensational triumph, Jessica became the first Welsh singer to reach the finals in 20 years, showcasing her exceptional talent on Sunday night at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.
The Cardiff Singer of the World competition, known as a pinnacle event in the classical music calendar, featured a total of 16 international singers, each vying for the coveted title. Out of the talented participants, Jessica stood tall as one of the five finalists competing for the crown. Joining her in the finals were Scottish mezzo Beth Taylor, South African soprano Nombulelo Yende, Italian bass Adolfo Corrado, and South African mezzo Siphokazi Molteno.
Ultimately, the distinguished title of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2023 was bestowed upon Adolfo Corrado, an Italian bass who captivated the judges with his exceptional performance. The 10-day competition drew to a close on Sunday night, marking another triumphant chapter in the history of this renowned biennial vocal competition.
Hailing from Llandissilio in Pembrokeshire, Jessica Robinson began her journey in music at a young age, participating in local eisteddfodau competitions. Her talent flourished, earning her national recognition through her achievements in the Urdd and National Eisteddfodau. Notably, Jessica represented Pembrokeshire in the Young Farmers Eisteddfod, securing victory in the under 26 solo category in 2008 and repeating her success in 2012.
Throughout her career, Jessica has garnered numerous accolades, including the Vocalist of the Year in the Pembrokeshire Chevron Music Awards and Musical Student of the Year at Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych. Her dedication to her craft led her to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she excelled, obtaining a distinction in MA Opera Performance. During her time at the RWCMD, she also achieved a first-class honours undergraduate degree and received prestigious awards such as the Aneurin Davies Award, Mansel Thomas Prize, Margaret Tann Award, Elias Soprano Award, and the 2016 Prince of Wales Scholarship.
In addition to her accomplishments on the national stage, Jessica Robinson’s talent has taken her across the UK and around the world. As a sought-after guest artist, she has performed in renowned venues such as New York, China, Switzerland, and Italy. Currently residing in Cardiff with her husband, Dyfed, and their dog, Splott, Jessica continues to captivate audiences with her enchanting voice.

Celebrating their 20th year in the competition, acclaimed pianists Llŷr Williams and Simon Lepper returned to mesmerize audiences with their remarkable artistry.
