THE PORT OF MILFORD HAVEN has announced its continued support for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) in Pembrokeshire for the next two years, this time as a Gold Associate Supporter. The Port has been a Silver Associate Supporter since 2021, but has increased its sponsorship to ensure even more young people in Pembrokeshire have access to the prestigious award programme. The partnership will provide opportunities for pupils from four schools in the area to complete the DofE programme, which is designed for 14-24-year-olds and focuses on developing skills, experience and confidence to navigate adult life.
Under the new partnership, pupils from Milford Haven School, Ysgol Harri Tudur in Pembroke Dock, Haverfordwest High and Fishguard’s Ysgol Bro Gwaun will have the opportunity to take part in volunteering, physical and skills activities, as well as expeditions. The funding will also support the development of specialist groups to reach marginalised individuals such as those from refugee or traveller communities.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme has been highly regarded for over six decades, and Ian Gwilym at DofE Wales said the Port’s commitment to the programme is fantastic and a significant boost to its development in the area. The programme is designed to help young people gain new experiences and develop valuable skills for work and life. The Port’s support will allow more young people in Pembrokeshire to take part in the programme, which is highly valued by employers and educational institutions.
Tom Sawyer, Chief Executive at the Port of Milford Haven, is delighted that the Port has become a Gold Associate, enabling pupils from Pembrokeshire to get involved in this life-affirming and enriching activity. He believes that DofE speaks to the values and motivations of a person and signifies more than just qualifications. He added that the programme indicates a willingness to sacrifice, strive, care, contribute, serve, lead and support, and that’s why they value it so highly.
The DofE programme has been a great success in Pembrokeshire, with over 6,000 young people completing it since its inception. The Port of Milford Haven’s continued support will provide even more opportunities for young people in the area to gain valuable life skills and experiences.
