Construction worker disqualified from driving after testing positive for cocaine

A father-of-two has been ordered off the roads for 12 months after his car ‘aquaplaned’  when he was almost three times over the legal cocaine limit.

James Patterson, 48, of North Court, Haverfordwest, was driving his Ford Fusion on the B4341 through Broadhaven when he was involved in a single vehicle collision at around 7.30pm on November 21, 2022.

A witness informed the police of the incident but when officers  arrived at the scene, the driver was nowhere to be seen.

Patterson was subsequently discovered in a nearby garage and he admitted to being the driver of the crashed vehicle.

“A drugs wipe tested positive for cocaine and the defendant was taken to the custody suite for further testing,” Crown Prosecutor Kelly Rivers told Haverfordwest magistrates earlier this week.

The tests showed he had 37 mcg of cocaine in his blood.  The specified legal limit is 10.

Patterson, who is employed as a construction worker with a local company, was represented in court by solicitor Mr David Williams.

“It had been raining extremely heavily and his car aquaplaned,”  he said.

“He’d consumed cocaine several days before.  As a result, it’s expected that he will be dismissed from his employment as he has to travel from one construction site to another, putting up barriers and taking them down.”

In addition to the 12 month disqualification, Patterson was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
