Milford Haven school praised for nurturing ‘rights-respecting global citizens’

Milford Haven school receives its award

Students at Milford Haven School are being hailed as ‘rights-respecting global citizens’. And that’s official!

The announcement was made earlier this week after the school received the UK Silver Rights Committed Award for its continued progress towards embedding children’s rights in its school’s policy, practice and ethos.

The latest honour comes just 12 months after the school was awarded the Bronze Award in 2022.

“I’m extremely proud of everyone who’s been involved in achieving this award, because to progress from bronze to silver so quickly shows the dedication and commitment of our pupils and our staff,” commented headteacher Ms Ceri-Ann Morris.

“ Our school ethos is ‘Together Aspire, Together Achieve’ and achieving the Unicef- UK Silver- Rights Committed Award truly has been a team effort.”

This award was granted by UNICEF UK as a result of the school’s work in embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in their policies, practice and culture and promoting knowledge and understanding of the Convention throughout the school community.

As a result, pupils at Milford Haven School are beginning to see themselves as rights-respecting global citizens and advocates for fairness and children’s rights.

“This is particularly apparent in the senior prefect team who run the annual pupil conference which ensures that every pupil has a voice and that every voice is heard,” added Ms Morris.

“Staff are now starting to see the positive impact on the school’s ethos, practice and environment.”

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award supports schools across the UK to embed children’s rights in their ethos and culture. The Award recognises achievement in putting the UN Convention on the Right of the Child at the heart of a school’s practice to improve wellbeing and help all children and young people realise their potential.

The Award is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation.

“Becoming a Rights Respecting School will go way beyond the gates of Milford Haven School but will have a positive impact on the whole community,” added Ms Morris.

“We very much look forward to working together with our young people to continue our journey towards achieving the next milestone, which is the Gold Rights Respecting Award.”
