Shadow Rural Team’s farm shop visit

Shadow Secretary of State Maria Eagle, Shadow Minister Huw Irranca Davies with Carmarthen East and Dynefwr Labour candidate Calum Higgins: At Cwm Cerrig.

THE SHADOW Secretary of State for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Labour MP Maria Eagle, joined Calum Higgins last week for a tour of Gorslas farm shop, Cwm Cerrig.
The visit offered an opportunity for Mrs Eagle to see a rural business that has diversified successfully, and thrived by promoting its local brand.
Owner Roland Watkins gave a guided tour of the facilities and discussed the promotion of local produce in the modern global markets.
Mrs Eagle explained in a round table discussion with customers that rural areas had been hit by the recession heavier than urban areas, and the wealth gap had widened between rural and urban areas during the last 5 years. She committed to tackling that issue if a Labour Government was returned in May.
After the visit, Calum Higgins said: “It was a privilege to show the Secretary and Minister of State around such a flagship rural business in the Constituency of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr. We all know how hard it’s been for rural areas and SME business over the last few years. Cwm Cerrig have shown how a local business can grow and do Carmarthenshire proud. The only way we can encourage more of this kind of entrepreneurship is by providing more help for rural businesses and more investment in our rural infrastructure.”
