Raising funds: Community Champion Dave Thomas and Elvis Presley tribute performer Mike Rees

TESCO CARDIGAN has managed to raise an impressive £685 between Friday, September 30 and Sunday, October 2, running a festival-themed fundraiser for the National Charity Partnership.

‘Rock the Shop’ was the latest fundraiser organised by the supermarket chain and is expected to have raised £400,000 to £600,000 nationally for the partnership, which is dedicated to helping millions of people reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Tesco colleagues have so far raised £12.6 million for the partnership since its launch in January 2015, with £8.9 million generated through store fundraising alone. This latest fundraiser will edge the partnership significantly closer to its overall fundraising target of £30 million in three years.

Through the partnership, Tesco is working with Diabetes UK and the BHF to tackle two of the UK’s biggest health issues – Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease. Type 2 diabetes can double a person’s risk of developing heart and circulatory disease and both conditions can lead to other health problems, but they are largely preventable. Around 3.6 million people in the UK are currently living with Type 2 diabetes and an estimated 7 million people living with heart and circulatory disease, with many more at risk.

Dave Thomas, Community Champion for Tesco, rocked the weekend away dressed as a punk in store, and Elvis Presley tribute performer Mike Rees joined in with the fun singing outside the store to many unsuspecting shoppers.

“It was a great weekend which was helped tremendously with the help of Mike,” said Dave. “It was a fun time, and one which will benefit so many people throughout the UK.”
