C A R M A R T H E N S H I R E schools have been competing for a chance to have an advert they have written played on local radio. Llanelli market was the setting on St David’s Day for the winning adverts to be announced, both in English and Welsh. Winning the Welsh award was Ysgol y Bedol, and the English winner was Johnstown Primary School.

The aim of the competition was to promote Carmerthen county’s outdoor and indoor markets in the towns of Carmarthen, Llanelli, Ammanford and Llandeilo, with the competition open to all primary schools in the county.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s executive board member responsible for the markets, Cllr Jeff Edmunds, said: “This is the first year we have started this challenge for schools. As judges we were all very impressed with standard of the adverts and the creativeness and uniqueness of them. I would like to thank the pupils for their hard work and also the teachers for their support in creating these adverts.”

A group of year 5 and year 6 pupils from each of the schools assisted Radio Cymru DJ Marc Griffiths to create the 30 second adverts, in both English and Welsh. Carmarthen County Council website has made all adverts available by providing the link www. carmarthenshiremarkets.co.uk.

As well as the pupils advert competition, also at the markets on St David’s Day were a number of other events including cawl tasters, recipe cards promoting where in the market you could purchase the ingredients to make your own cawl, school choirs, free face-painting, free pictures and more.
