3000 in cross country championship

Screen Shot 2016-04-13 at 14.36.38THE STUNNING weather in the week and on the day attracted over 3,000 people to the 2016 Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships on Thursday, March 17, at Carmarthen United Counties Showground.

A terrific number of 1375 competitors from more than 85 Dyfed primary schools competed and a total of more than 3,000 people & supporters, making all roads around Carmarthen very busy, turned out in the sun for the 29th annual event organised by Hedydd Davies Chairman of Carmarthen Harriers.

The event was being filmed by S4C’s daily Welsh programme “Heno” based in Llanelli and an item was shown on TV on Friday, March 18.

The first of the eight races started at 4.30pm and the presentation of the 128 medals were made at 5.55pm.

The championships this year was sponsored by the Freemasons of West Wales and McDonalds Carmarthen, organised by Carmarthen Harriers with support from Pembrokeshire Harriers.

Awards to the first ten in each race, first three teams and winning county were presented by the invited guests – Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen Cllr and Mrs Barry Williams, Carol Anthony Chair of Welsh Athletics, John Elward Vice President of WA, Cllr Alun Lenny Carmarthenshire County Council, Miss Pippa Mounsey McDonalds and David Harris West Wales Freemasons Provincial Council.

In the team competition there were five different team winners: Roch and Mary Immaculate both had one win each.

Ysgol Y Dderwen, Gymraeg Aberaeron and Tenby Juniors won two team races each, and as a result with no points difference – were the overall joint team winners and will share the trophy. In the inter county competition Carmarthenshire won five races and Pembrokeshire three events.

The final cross country match took place on Wednesday, March 23, at Parc Dinefwr in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, where Dyfed Primary Schools hosted West Glamorgan Primary Schools in the annual match.
