ABERYSTWYTH TOWN have issued a statement following web and Twitter reports yesterday that wingman Craig Williams has signed for mid-Wales rivals Newtown.
Williams’ departure was reported on the Robins’ official website and Twitter feed and reprinted verbatim on the official Welsh Premier League site, although both have since removed the story.
It was also reported by this website but a statement from Park Avenue says:
“Aberystwyth Town FC were astonished to read reports online today of one of our registered players signing for another Dafabet Welsh Premier League Club.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all our players remain registered with the club until the end of May, and no players can be signed by any WPL clubs until the transfer window re-opens in the second week of June .
“Any signings reported before the transfer window opens on June 9 constitute an offence under FAW Article 66.2 and Aberystwyth Town FC would be within its rights to report any offending parties to the FAW Disciplinary Department.”
Meanwhile, sources close to the Black & Greens say that midfielder Ross Stephens could be the next player to switch to Latham Park once the transfer window opens.
The Llanidloes-born 30-yearold made Welsh Premier appearances for Caersws in 2003/4 during a loan spell from Shrewsbury Town. Released from the Gay Meadow after a loan period at Redditch United, he signed for the Bluebirds in June 2005.
A Welsh Under-18 and Under- 20 international, Stephens moved to Rhyl in January 2007. However, he decided to quit at the end of the season and signed for Welshpool Town, but moved on to Aberystwyth in January 2009 before switching to Newtown in the summer of the same year.
After a season at Latham Park, he switched to Prestatyn Town in May 2010, spending four and a half seasons at Bastion Gardens before a return to Aberystwyth in January 2015, and has scored 81 goals from 313 (+23) WPL appearances.
One player leaving Newtown for a second time in his career is defender Rob Williams, who made just four WPL appearances this time around after being sent-off in his first game. The TNS scholarship product has earned a full-time post with the Manchester City academy.
