Ammanford lose out to Bont in rain-affected game

AMMANFORD lost to neighbours Pontarddulais for the third time this season, this time by 8 wickets in a rain-affected match at Ffosyrefail.

Given the weather outlook, it was a crucial toss to win, and Ammanford lost it. Bont inevitably asked them to bat.

A solid 85 run opening partnership between Kurtis Marsh (53) and Rhodri-Huw Davies (19) gave Ammanford a promising start which could have been properly built on in a full match, but a series of showers interrupted play and concentration.

Xavier Clarke (27no) and Alun Evans (19no) provided Ammanford’s only other runs of note, and the innings was brought to a premature close, again by rain, on 145 for 4 after 35 overs.

Matthew Fisher and Richard Grant took a couple of wickets each for Bont.

The rain delays reduced Bont’s innings to 30 overs, and their target was adjusted to 180, but the threat of further rain delays meant that the Duckworth Lewis system was about to play a leading role.

Having got cheaply rid of Glamorgan’s Lukas Carey and Richard Grant, Ammanford were ahead on the DL count for 16 overs, but then former Ammanford stalwart Matthew Fisher (65no) and captain Cameron Herring (52no) were able to step up the pace significantly.

When the final shower brought an end to play after 22 overs, Pontarddulais had sneaked ahead on the DL scale and the home team, closing on 140 for 2, were deemed to have won by 8 wickets.

The defeat slipped Ammanford down to eighth place in Premier 1, 23 points clear of strugglers Clydach and Port Talbot.

Next Saturday they are at home to Neath and on Sunday they play Llanelli at the Park in the SWCA T20.
