BWLCH RANGERS were agonisingly knocked out of the West Wales Cup on Saturday (Oct 8) as they were beaten 1-0 by Pembrokeshire side Hakin United.

The Rangers had a number of chances to score in the game and on another day could have come away with the win.

It was the home side who made the better start and they went ahead after 10 minutes when Steve Mathias opened the scoring.

Bwlch came close to equalising soon after when a fierce drive rebounded back off the post.

Shortly before the break, Hakin almost doubled their lead after the Bwlch keeper came out to clear the ball, but when he missed it, Ben Steele shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Bwlch were dealt a blow as, in the build up to that chance, the keeper was injured and he had to be subbed with defender Lee Davies having to go in goal.

Clayton Jenkins then came close for Bwlch but his shot was saved by the Hakin keeper.

It was still 1-0 when the half time whistle went, with Bwlch still very much in the game.

Bwlch came out strongly in the second half and came close when they were awarded a free kick, but Jenkins’ effort went just wide.

Sam Chiffi then crossed for Jenkins but his header went over the bar.

Hakin thought they had made the game safe late on in the half as Dean Fulton played in Ben Steele, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Bwlch continued to push for an equaliser but it didn’t come, as Ethan Scougall sent an inviting ball across the box, but there was no finish.

Hakin held on to secure their passage into the next round of the West Wales Cup.

Bwlch return to league action on Saturday (Oct 15) as they are away to Gorseinon.
