Borth knocked out by Mach

Borth United 1

Machynlleth 2

screen-shot-2016-10-31-at-14-37-41BORTH UNITED welcomed Machynlleth to a pleasant Uppingham Fields on Saturday (Oct 8) in the first round of the Mid Wales League Cup.

In a tense start, both teams made some good openings. With Ben Jones sliding the ball wide of the post, Liam Lewis with a deft lob that was only inches over the bar was the pick of the chances for Borth. Mach made some good chances as well as the half progressed but, overall, the 0-0 score at half time seemed just about right.

Without doubt, Machynlleth held the upper hand in the early stages of the second half and their pressure paid off with Callum Roberts’ header from a corner kick passing Sean Gates in the Borth goal for the opener.

However, Borth, to their credit, upped their game and grabbed an equaliser as Ben Jones crossed the ball from the left wing and Liam Lewis’ header was credited to have crossed the goal line by referee Aled Jones, despite Mach’s protests.

As the tie reached its final minutes, Dave Jones’ low shot from outside the box evaded Gates and looked to have won the tie for Mach.

In a last gasp chance for Borth, Ben Byrne’s left wing cross was met by Sam Middleton, only for his header to hit the post.

In a closely fought tie that could have gone either way, it is Machynlleth who progress to the next round.

Borth’s excellent unbeaten start to the league season was deservedly recognised in midweek with Gwion Pugh-Jones being named as the Spar League player of the month for Aug/ Sept.
