Carew go second after beating Town

CAREW moved into second place in Division 1 on Saturday (May 21) as they beat Haverfordwest by 12 runs.

Haverfordwest won the toss and chose to field and they were able to restrict Carew to 166-9 in their 45 overs.

Tim Hicks and Rhys Davies opened up for Carew and they shared 55 runs for the first wicket. Hicks hit four boundaries in his score of 27 but he was caught and bowled by Clive Tucker.

Soon after, Tucker had Ian Sefton caught by Dan Potter to leave Carew on 63-2.

Davies and Brian Hall then added another 37 runs for the third wicket to take their side into treble figures.

Chris Phillips broke that partnership as he trapped Hall leg before on a score of 16.

Another good stand of 30 between Davies and Nick Davies followed as Rhys reached his half century.

Jake Merry had Nick Davies caught by Potter and he then bowled Shaun Whitfield with the very next ball.

There was no hat trick for Merry but that left Town on 130-5 and it then became 139-6 as Luke Hicks fell to the bowling of Phillips.

Rhys Davies had hit seven fours and a six in his score of 67 but he was then trapped leg before by Johnny White.

In the 42nd over, Jake Merry had James Hinchliffe caught by Ashley James and with the very next ball he had Iori Hicks caught by Chris Phillips.

Again Merry was unable to grab a hat trick and Carew limped to their total of 166-9.

Town lost Dan Potter in the second ball of their reply as he was trapped leg before by Sam Harts.

However, James Marchant and Ben Field then shared 88 runs for the second wicket to put Town in a strong position.

Field hit five fours and three sixes in his score of 48 but he was trapped leg before by James Hinchliffe.

88-2 became 91-3 as Marchant was caught by Brian Hall off the bowling of Sion Jenkins on a score of 28.

Jake Merry hit 11 before falling to Shaun Whitfield and Dan Field hit a four and a six in his score of 12 before he also fell to Whitfield.

That saw Town slip to 115-5 and that soon became 125-7 as Whitfield claimed the wickets of Ashley James and Jack Scriven.

Hinchliffe then also claimed two wickets in quick succession as he had Johnny White caught by Luke Hicks before bowling Will Phillips.

Chris Phillips had made his way to a score of 28 and seemed to be Town’s last hopes of sealing a win but he was then bowled by Iori Hicks.

That brought the game to a close with Town falling 12 runs short of their target.

On Saturday, May 28, Town travel to Neyland while Carew go to Narberth.
