Claremont School: DTH welcomes his visitors

SCARLETS WINGER and Canadian international DTH van der Merwe welcomed a group of young aspiring Canadian rugby players to Parc y Scarlets on Thursday (Mar 17).

Claremont Spartans Rugby, from Vancouver Canada, are currently on a 12 day tour of the UK playing rugby, enjoying the RBS 6 Nations and having an experience of a lifetime!

The west Wales leg of Claremont Spartan’s tour was organised in conjunction with Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth, Cefneithin.

Canada’s Rugby World Cup star van der Merwe welcomed the touring group to the Parc on Thursday afternoon giving them a tour of the stadium and a little behind the scenes insight into life as a professional rugby player.

The tour included a brief talk in the state-of-the-art altitude chamber and the gym. Whilst pitchside DTH explained how he’d been inspired the first time he heard Sosban Fach sung at Parc y Scarlets.

Following the conclusion of the celebrity-led tour the group utilised the first-class facilities available at the Parc to hold a skills training session in the indoor arena.

Commenting after the tour DTH van der Merwe said: “It was great to have an opportunity to welcome the guys here to Llanelli and to the Parc. The weather was good so they got to see the place looking at its very best!

“After hearing all about the history of the Scarlets I had the opportunity to give them a little preview of what life is like as a professional rugby player. Hearing some familiar accents was good too!”

Claremont Spartans took on Ysgol Bro Morgannwg before visiting Principality Stadium to watch Wales take on Italy and returned to Canada on Tuesday.
