First point-to-point since 1980

THE first Point-to-Point race meeting to be held within the county of Carmarthenshire since March 1980 will take place at Ffos Las Racecourse on Sunday, December 9.

In the intervening years the races have been held in Lydstep and Trecoed in Pembrokeshire.

Master of the Carmarthenshire Hunt, Dai Jones said: “It is with the goodwill of the Arena Racing Company, owners of Ffos Las Racecourse that we have been able to bring our fixture home to within our hunt boundaries.

“Looking back to that 1980 day in Llanybri it was when Peter Bowen, currently one of Britain’s top trainers, rode his only winner as a jockey. It also saw Mary William, who is the mother of top National Hunt trainer Evan Williams, successful in the Ladies’ Race. Who knows what might happen in this meeting.”

The gates at the West Wales course will open on the day at 9.30am with the first of seven races on the card starting at 11.30am. Entry is £10 for adults and there is unlimited parking. Racecards will be available from a number of outlets around the ground.

The band Echolalia will be playing in the bar before, during and after racing which will add to the family atmosphere of the day.

A special Christmas lunch package is being offered at £29 per head. This cost includes entry, a two course carvery lunch and a complimentary racecard. Bookings are available through Hanna Foligno, telephone 01554-811092.
