A RECORD number of competitors turned out for the Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Athletics Championships on Monday (Apr 25) on a bright but windy evening in Johnstown and saw an excellent effort from everyone who was present.

This match started primary schools athletics action for the summer as more than 35 Carmarthenshire schools attended, more than ever before. Once again the track was full, the leisure centre car park packed and food was quickly sold, with plenty of local talent out on show.

There must have been close to 300 competitors and several hundred spectators in the 14 event programme, which saw the championships go on till 8.30pm, bringing in the use of the track floodlights for the end and last few races.

The winner this year for 2016 was shared between Ysgol Dewi Sant and Ysgol Y Castell who both scored 31 points each. They were closely followed by Nantgaredig (28) Y Dderwen (27) Griffith Jones (26) and Llangennech (25). Scores were very close for the whole event and it came down to the final relays in the end.

Presentation of awards to the top three in each event was made by the Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen Cllr Barry and Barbara Williams, and the sponsor Ron Mounsey of McDonalds.

The Dyfed Primary Schools Athletics Championships is at Carmarthen on Wednesday 22 June. Selection will follow from this for the Dyfed team v West Glamorgan Schools in July.
