NEWTOWN secured a third win in four games on Saturday as they thumped Cardiff Met 4-1 at Latham Park.
The win for the home side sees them stay in eighth place, but, more importantly, they are now eight points above the league’s bottom two.
Saturday’s game saw the Met start well as a headed attempt was well saved by Dave Jones in the Newtown goal.
The Robins scored early in their midweek win over the Druids and they did so again just moments after that chance for the visitors.
There were only four minutes on the clock when Tyrone Ofori scored to give the home side the lead.
Despite that setback, the Met began to have a good spell of pressure and they were rewarded with the equaliser on 20 minutes.
A free kick was sent into the box and Brad Wooldridge was in the right place to head the ball in.
With nearly half an hour gone, Lifumpa Yande Mwandwe crossed into the box for Ofori who powered a header into the top corner for his second of the game.
On the stroke of half time, the visitors came close but Robins keeper Jones made two good save to keep the home side in front.
The Met started the second half brightly and had two appeals for a penalty turned down and they also dealt with any Newtown pressure.
However, with 55 minutes on the clock the hosts were awarded a free kick in a good position. Jordan Evans took it and fired into the top corner to give them a 3-1 lead.
The Met were looking for a way back into the game and they almost got one back when Lewis Rees flashed a cross into the area but no one could get on the end of it.
Soon after, things went from bad to worse for the Archers as Evans scored his second of the game to make it 4-1 to Newtown.
Both sides continued to look for more goals as the Met came close from a free kick while at the other end a Newtown cross across goal did not receive any takers.
With two minutes to go, Elliot Evans saw his shot blocked and that was as good as it got for the visitors who suffered defeat.
Newtown are now six points off the top six and will be looking up the table rather than looking down at the bottom end.
The Robins are next in action on Saturday, March 20, when they travel to Park Avenue to take on Aberystwyth Town.
Cardiff Met will look to bounce back as they take on Cefn Druids.
