Some of the Groundhoppers: In Ceredigion last year

AFTER A successful ‘hop’ around the Ceredigion league last year, Chris Berezai brings his Groundhop to Carmarthenshire this April, where they will sample the games of the Carmarthenshire League.

Groundhopping weekends are for football fans that like to “collect” football grounds – and that means watching games at as many different venues as possible.

The customers range from those who are just starting out on the hobby to the experienced ‘hopper’, who will number the grounds visited for a game in four figures.

It’s Welsh Spring Hop time, and one of our most popular events features a new League over an action-packed weekend. This year the group will say hello to the Carmarthenshire League, and they are looking forward to sampling the hospitality of the clubs in a League that sits at the same level as the Ceredigion League, and directly below the Welsh League.

Organiser Chris Berezai outlined the schedule for the event, saying, “We start on Friday with our usual ‘optional extra’ – as the game is already scheduled, we are planning to visit the Welsh league club closest to where I used to live, Garden Village, as they host Ton Pentre at Stafford Common (7.30pm).

“Like last year, there will be a Special Hop deal that will include admission, programme, and food. Saturday morning starts just north of Carmarthen in the village of Abergwili as they host Llansteffan (11am) before we head to Llandeilo (2pm) as they entertain Llangennech.

“From here we head to Johnstown and our final game of the day as they take on Drefach (5pm). On the Sunday, we have two more games: Llandovery kick us off at home to Port Tywyn (11.30am), before we finish the weekend at Carmarthen Stars v Ponthenri (3pm). Then it’s back to Cardiff for a drop-off in plenty of time for trains. As always, we add the proviso that all games are subject to final confirmation.”

Each club will be providing a programme for the hoppers, and tickets for the games can be purchased in advance.
