Harries double sinks Aber

Aberystwyth 0

Carmarthen II 2

screen-shot-2017-01-03-at-12-32-21CARMARTHEN ATHLETIC SECONDS braved the weather and travelled up the A487 – Aberystwyth bound. They were to face Aberystwyth University for a mid-table clash, with only 12 fit players.

Aberystwyth started strongly, probing the Carmarthen defence, but Lowri Jones, Marianne Spratt, Siriol Richards and Ffion Dart worked brilliantly to hold them off stopping two short corners.

Carmarthen looked to press forward, with the midfield ers Sioned Raymond and Kate Hill managing to poke through the holes.

Aberystwyth had a lucky break, but Sophie Nix did excellently to hold her own and send the ball back down to the eager Jayde Collings.

There came an increase in pace which led to a break, with Efa Jones finding Charlotte Harries, who had a brilliant strike at goal, but it was Janine Owen who deflected the ball behind the goalie to put Carmarthen in the lead, 0-1. This goal inspired the Carmarthen team, led by Rachael Hughes, who continued to play an excellent first half.

It was Aberystwyth that controlled the majority of territory and possession to begin the second half, but with excellent work from young Kate Hill and Efa Jones combining their skill and speed down the left side, it gave Carmarthen the momentum they needed.

Aberystwyth began to tire and although having fallen twice in true panto style, the unbreakable Siriol Richards had a lovely sprint to secure her position as the oppositions’ choice for player of the match.

The game’s second goal came to the ever-improving Charlotte Harries, who slipped the ball over the advancing Aber keeper, and added another goal to her season’s tally, 0-2.

Sioned Raymond secured her position as Carmarthen’s player of the match after both her defensive and attacking work as well as her persistent tackling throughout the game. It’s true to say that Carmarthen finished strongly and played as a team to secure their second win of the season.
