Johnstown Under 14s: In their new Persimmon sponsored training kit

A CARMARTHENSHIRE football club has been awarded £1,000 as part of Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions initiative.

Johnstown Under 14s Football Club was selected by the house builder to receive the cash, which has gone towards the purchase of a new training kit for the squad.

Previously the youngsters had to wear their own clothes to training and on their way to games. The new training kit includes the Persimmon Homes logo.

Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Nationwide, the company will donate a total of £750,000.

Shane John, who runs Johnstown Under 14s Football Club, said: “These new kits will give the players a real sense of belonging and pride in the club and community that they belong to.

“Some of the teams that play in our league are much better financed than us and this sometimes means that we struggle to retain children in our team. These kits allow us to show a real presence in the community and to attract local children to take part in football.

“We thank Persimmon Homes West Wales for this funding as it will help keep our team together.”

Sharon Robinson, sales director for Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “Johnstown Under 14s Football Club has displayed a great amount of dedication to the local community.

“The club is of great value to local area and we wanted to support them in any way we could.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”
