Neyland: Two new benches unveiled at memorial football game

TWO new memorial benches were unveiled in Neyland on Sunday (Aug 28) as the town’s footballers came together for a special match.

A team of over 35s took on the under 35s at the Athletic Ground and a good crowd was in attendance.

The match coincided with the revealing of the two memorial benches in memory of former players Paul ‘Miffy’ Smith and Stephen ‘Rio’ Rhead, who had passed away in recent years.

The score did not matter but it was won by the older side with a score line of 4-3. Goals for the “young ‘uns” were converted by Aiden Rees, Mikey Chandler and Max Bowman-Davies. Scorers for the ‘overs’ were George Sanderson (pen), Jason Phillips and two for Richard Evans-Browning with a fine headed winner.

The match was refereed by Sean Hannon.

Neyland AFC said on their Facebook page: “Thanks to everyone who made the day possible, especially Mark ‘Bossy’ Edwards, who has been facilitating the matches over several years to raise funds towards the benches. Thanks to the Legionnaire for its support for ‘Rio’ and his family.

“There was additional help in finally accessing the benches from Gareth Lawlor and Jonny Sutton. And the club expresses gratitude to the staff at The Hub for their patience and professional service on the day.”
