ON A WARM and sunny midweek evening, four of the Carmarthen Harriers middle distance group went to Tipton near Birmingham for the latest BMC Regional races open to all ages from across the UK, and every one came home with new personal bests with Ben Thomas dipping under the two minute mark with a time of 1.59.3.

Also taking part in the 800 metres was Iwan Glynn and Callum Lovatt recording best times of 2.03.9 and 2.09.9 respectively. Archi Morgan contested the 1500 metres and did well in difficult conditions to finish in 4.34.5. Thomas & Glynn’s times are the fastest set in Wales so far this season.

Following a busy day of schools competitions in West Wales earlier in the day, Welsh Athletics held their open sprints meeting at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium and saw numerous PB’s recorded throughout.

The fixture started off with some sprint hurdles heats and continuing his fine form this year was Glen Elsdon performing well again in the 110 metres (14.60).

As well as Elsdon competing in the 100m sprint (10.86), another 4 under 17 & under 20 athletes were involved in the 100m & 200m, coming away with 5 personal bests between them: Zak Daly 100m (12.11) & 200m (24.29); Rhun Edwards 100m (12.35) & 200m (24.43); Alicia Samuel 100m (12.57) & Celyn Williams 100m (13.05) & 200m (26.73)

The Welsh Athletics / WSAA Combined Events Championships returned to Swansea University Track and around 120 competitors from across Wales competed in disciplines such as sprint hurdles, 200m, 800m, high jump, long jump and shot. For many it was a new challenge taking part in events they were not familiar with.

A small team of Dyfed schools athletes were present and saw good results including Beca Roberts coming in bronze medal position in the under 15 all-rounder event and Lili Church jumping a massive 1.65m in the high jump competition to put her 4th in the UK rankings.

Team wise, Dyfed filled second place in both the under 15 girls and boys categories and collected another two individual awards thanks to Ella Wintle and Dylan Phillips.

The remainder of the team, consisting of Carmarthen, Pembrokeshire and Llanelli athletes, were Lucy Wintle, Zara Evans, Chloe Simmonite, Flavia Jenkins, Ioan Melrose, Amy Mullen, Tyree Thompson, Rhidian Jenkins and Dafydd Waters.

After two long journeys into England, the West Wales under 17 and 20 composite team’s third match was closer to home at Cardiff for the premier division match against Team DC, Avon, Cardiff, Swansea and Cheltenham.

With great team spirit on and off the track, the youngsters secured their best result of the season finishing in 2nd overall behind the host club. The team now head to the final of the South/ West promotion match in a few weeks’ time over in Newport.

Finally, in amongst 5,000 runners at the Swansea Half Marathon, Sharon Leech (1.29.38 F45) Vince Bailey (1.36.06 M40) Huw Davies (1.37.02 M40) and Lisa Forrest (2.02.45 F35) finished the course in good times.
