Quins go top after beating RGC

CARMARTHEN QUINS moved to the top of the Indigo Premiership table on Saturday (Jan 29) as they beat RGC 17-14.

There was an early chance for RGC with a penalty but Dion Jones sent his effort just wide of the posts.

Soon after the Quins were on the attack and a great run from Ben Leung saw him go over for the first try of the game. Steffan Marshall converted to make it 7-0 to the hosts.

The Quins thought they had scored again soon after but a touch down came after the whistle following a knock on.

RGC looked to respond and came close but some good defence from the Quins kept the visitors at bay.

On the stroke of half time RGC had another penalty from half way but Jones’ effort fell short and the Quins went in at the break with a 7-0 lead.

Marshall then extended the Quins’ lead with a penalty before RGC got themselves back in the game.

They set up a rolling maul and it was Brodie Coghlan who touched the ball down before Jones added the extras to bring the score back to 10-7.

The Quins responded well and scored following a rolling maul of their own; Torin Myhill getting the touch down and Marshall then added the extras.

RGC looked to respond again and had a lineout in a good position but the Quins were able to steal the ball.

Moments later though they were back on the attack and Afon Bagshaw spotted a gap and ran in to score the try. Jones added the extras to bring the score to 17-14.

The Quins looked to give themselves some breathing space late on but Marshall sent a penalty wide.

RGC pushed for the win but the Quins held on for their third win from their opening four games.

RGC are next in action on Saturday, February 5, when they host Merthyr with kick off at 12pm.

The Quins are back in action on February 19, when they travel to Ebbw Vale.
