CARMARTHEN QUINS made it through to the third round of the WRU National Cup as they eased to a 52-19 victory over Narberth on Saturday, February 18.
It was Narberth who started the game well however, as they forced the Quins back and a loose pass from Morgan Allen put Chris Banfield under pressure and he knocked the ball on giving Narberth an early chance to take the lead.
The penalty was right in front of the posts and Ianto Griffiths made no mistake to make it 3-0 to the Otters.
The Quins were then penalised for going off their feet giving Narberth another penalty and Griffiths again sent the ball through the posts from just inside the Quins half to make it 6-0 with nine minutes gone.
The visitors began to get into their stride and with fourteen minutes on the clock the Quins worked the ball out left to captian Rhys Williams who touched down in the corner for the first try of the game. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 6-5 to the Otters.
With twenty minutes on the clock Narberth were given another penalty which Griffiths sent through the posts to make it 9-5.
Three minutes later the Quins were given a penalty try which also saw Narberth’s Tom Slater given a yellow card for his part. Connor Lloyd was then given the easiest of tasks to convert under the posts to give them a 9-12 lead.
With the Otters still down to 14 men the Quins pushed forward and with half an hour on the clock they scored their third try of the game with Nathan Williams credited with the pushover try. Craig Evans sent the conversion through the posts for a 9-19 lead.
Griffiths then scored Narberth’s fourth penalty of the game to reduce the score to 12-19.
It remained 12-19 at half time and Narberth were still in with a chance of winning the game.
Ten minutes into the second half the Quins were given a second penalty try after Narberth’s scrum was penalised. Craig Evans then sent the easy conversion through the posts for a 12-26 lead.
Dylan Cooper was then given a yellow card for Narberth again putting the Quins in a strong position with the man advantage.
They soon made their advantage count as Kieran Jones broke through to score a try just under the posts and Craig Evans added the extras for a score of 12-33.
On the hour mark the Quins increased their lead further as Jones did well to hold the ball before offloading to Morgan Griffiths who ran on to score in the corner. Evans was unlucky to see the conversion bounce back off the post.
Narberth battled back but were guilty of giving the ball away at crucial moments.
With just over five minutes remaining Chris Banfield sped through to score the Quins’ seventh try of the game and Evans sent the conversion through for a 12-45 score.
Banfield was involved again moments later as he burst through before passing to Morgan Griffiths who offloaded to Lawrence Reynolds and Evans again added the extra two points.
In the closing minutes the Quins were penalised for being offside and Narberth kicked to touch. Callum Tree emerged with the ball and did well to reach over and touch the ball down for a consolation try. Replacement Lewis Wood sent the ball through the posts to give the score line a more respectable look of 19-52.
That was the last action of the game and the Quins now progress to the last eight of the competition.
