FOOTBALL fans turned out in their hundreds to share the Euro 2016 excitement as S4C held a tour of football clubs across Wales.
Over the last few weeks, members of S4C’s Euro 2016 presentation team visited Llandudno, Bangor, Bala, Penrhyncoch and Carmarthen to meet fans, hold coaching sessions with junior football teams and hold quizzes and Q&A sessions.
Among those who went on the tour, which was held to promote S4C’s coverage of Euro 2016, was presenter Dylan Ebenezer, commentator Nic Parry and former Wales internationals Iwan Roberts, Malcolm Allen and Owain Tudur Jones. Also playing a big role in the tour was professional freestyle footballer Ash Randall, from Cardiff, who amazed the crowds with his jaw-dropping tricks.
Dylan Ebenezer, who is originally from Aberystwyth, said: “It was great to speak to fans across the nation about Welsh football. There were a lot of enthusiastic fans in Aberystwyth and we all received such a warm welcome there. Ash Randall’s skills weren’t bad either!”
As well as the tour, S4C held an event called Soap Star Soccer: Pobol y Cwm v Rownd a Rownd, in which stars from the channel’s two soaps went head-to-head at Latham Park in Newtown. In a spirited match between the two sides, Rownd a Rownd eventually eased to a 7-0 triumph.
Hundreds of fans were there on the day to watch the match, as well as the finals of another programme Codi Gôl, which saw teams of parents from Amlwch, Ffostrasol, Pwllheli and Ammanford compete for the prize of a trip to France during the Euros to play against a team of parents in Brittany. Throughout the tour, S4C has also been raising money in aid of our charity partner Street Football Wales, a charity that helps homeless and socially excluded people in Wales through football activities. A raffle has been held at each destination on the tour, and the total sum raised will be announced after Euro 2016.
“It was a lovely day at Latham Park and there was a lively atmosphere,” added Dylan, “The Pobol y Cwm crew had a hard time, but in fairness Rownd a Rownd had two teams – one for each half – and the odd talented player.”
Each one of Wales’ Group matches during UEFA Euro 2016 will be shown live and in HD on S4C.
