PENYGROES youngster Nathaniel Emptage has won a Wales Rugby Union Shirt in a competition run by Carmarthenshire Libraries.
The competition was held after Carmarthenshire Libraries were drawn from a national competition to win the fantastic prize of a WRU Shirt.
This competition was held to coincide with the RBS 6 Nations Championship, and the WRU said:
“This is a great competition for young people to combine their passion for rugby and literature; both are important parts of Welsh tradition and culture.”
Eight-year-old Nathaniel, who attends Ysgol Gynradd Penygroes, was presented with the shirt by Scarlets player Tom Price at Llanelli Public Library.
Hundreds of children took part in the competition throughout all the locations at Carmarthenshire Libraries and the winners were drawn at random. There were nine other lucky winners who were also presented with runner up prizes including WRU wallets, pin badges and activity packs by Tom Price.
The aim of the competition was to encourage children to discover what they can find in their local library. Children had to discover where Scorch, the WRU mascot, was hiding in their local library and then fill in a short form to enter the competition.
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “It’s great that Carmarthenshire Libraries won the shirt which it has used as the first prize in its competition to promote what our libraries have to offer. Well done to Nathaniel for winning the shirt and to the other youngsters who won prizes.”
Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates said: “This is a creative idea offering young people across Wales the chance to embrace this year’s Six Nations tournament while also making the most of their local library facilities.
“2016 marks the Year of Adventure in Wales so I would definitely encourage everyone to get involved with this adventure competition. While searching for Scorch why not also use this opportunity to discover your next favourite book or author.”
