TEN Pembrokeshire and two Carmarthenshire schools played in the 2017 Fair Trade Cup last Friday (Jun 30).
The fourth Fairtrade football tournament, hosted by Tavernspite CP, saw Tenby VC crowned as triple champions.
Participating teams represented twelve Fairtrade Producer Countries and all games were played with Fairtrade stitched footballs from Bala Sport.
Narberth pipped Tavernspite on penalties in an exciting Third place play off, and after a 4-2 victory in the final Tenby took the Fair Trade Cup, with Johnstown as runners up. Johnstown’s goalkeeper, Adil, was awarded player of the tournament.
Sharron, founder of the Fair Trade in Football Campaign, and organiser of the tournament said: “Thanks to everyone involved for making the Fair Trade Cup such fun. I was really impressed with the level of football; it was exciting and so close! The exemplary behaviour of all participants is a credit to the schools involved. This is more than just a tournament, it’s about fairness, bringing schools together and supporting Sialkot football workers. We have the power to make a difference.”
Schools got into the Fairtrade spirit, with Johnstown (Colombia) and Llys Hywel (Costa Rica) bringing fans with flags and Fairtrade posters, their cheerleaders giving rousing support. Tenby (Ecuador), Golden Grove (Mexico) St Teilos, (Ghana), and Hafan Y Mor (Honduras) had printed t-shirts. St Marks designed their own shirts and Narberth’s shirts were designed by their Fairtrade Committee.
Ffion, from Fair Trade Wales said: “It’s great to see so many schools taking part in the Fairtrade football tournament. Students showed a great understanding of Fairtrade, and both teachers and supporters encouraged activities like the tournament in educating the community on issues like Fairtrade.”
Sponsored by Hub Cymru Africa and supported by Fair Trade Wales, the Fairtrade tournament was organised by Fair Trade In Football Campaign Founder Sharron Hardwick and Tavernspite teachers Julie Houghton and Richard Henton, assisted by Naomi Rees and Phillip Evans. Dyffryn Taf pupils and Ceri Phillips and Steven from Swansea Community Trust were responsible for the refereeing.
Fairtrade guarantees a minimum price to workers, and an additional Fairtrade premium. Fairtrade football premiums have already provided a water filtration system, free eye care and bus transport to the community producing Bala Sport footballs.
