EVANS AND WILLIAMS renewed their rivalry with Seaside on Saturday (May 7) in the TG Davies Cup Final, as the two prominent teams from Carmarthenshire came together in what was a fiercely competitive battle at Stebonheath Park, Llanelli.

With Evans and Williams having lost in the Senior Cup final to Trostre at the end of April, they were handed a chance to redeem themselves, though to bag the win they had to overcome a Seaside team that has long been the dominant force in Carmarthenshire football, until E&W toppled them to claim last year’s Premier Division title.

This year’s Premier Division is still very much in the balance between the two sides, as although Seaside currently hold a 21 point lead, Evans and Williams have seven games in hand, and should they win all these games, the title would be decided on goal difference.

The final promised to be a close affair as both teams had met throughout the season and the winning margins were always slim or else a draw and it looked like it was going to remain tight during the majority of the first half as both sides failed to capitalise and score despite some great football and a number of attacks at both ends.

It fell to Mark Smolka to take Seaside into the lead shortly before half time as he netted the ball at the Penallt end of the ground.

It was a fiercely competitive match and there were some suitably crunching tackles during the game and the referee Ben Katherins had to issue three yellow cards by the end of it.

Whatever Evans and Williams’ manager Neil Williams said to his team in the changing rooms at half time appeared to work as his side shot out of the changing rooms for the second half and Jonny Thomas promptly scored two goals in quick succession, taking Evans & Williams into a 2-1 lead.

Seaside looked like they were the stronger team towards the end of the second half and threatened to equalise with a number of efforts, which included a header by their goalkeeper in a dramatic last minute of the game.

In the end it was the Albies captain Andrew Harry who lifted the T G Davies Cup and double goal scorer Jonny Thomas won man of the match.
