Young Ambassadors visit Italy

ambassadorsTHE YOUNG Ambassador (YA) programme is a National scheme run in Primary and Secondary Schools across Ceredigion. There are Bronze YAs in the primary schools and Silver and Gold YAs in the secondary schools. Young people are selected due to their sporting talent, and more importantly, due to their exceptional commitment and ability as young leaders to inspire others. They promote healthy lifestyles, sport programmes and encourage others to be as active as possible.

Two Ceredigion Gold YAs were recently offered the opportunity of a lifetime to attend a two week work placement with Torino FC. Jac Horwood and Lowri Walker, both sixth form pupils in Penglais school, travelled out to Turin, Italy and spent time observing academy coaching, how the club runs from day to day and visited football museums in Turin. They spent a morning in a local Primary school and spoke to pupils about school life in Wales. A highlight of their time in Turin included a tour of the Juventus FC stadium and watching a live ‘Serie A’ game, Torino FC vs Lazio. The experience was very worthwhile, as Lowri is a member of Aston Villa FC and has gained a football scholarship to America next year, seeing a professional club up close was a huge benefit.

Jac is also pursuing a career in Sport, and is planning to study a sports degree in September and go onto to become a Physical Education teacher, so the coaching experience and time spent in the local school helped was an invaluable experience. Lowri said: “It was an amazing experience which I would definitely do again. I learnt so much and met people from other cultures and backgrounds, which I now consider lifelong friends.” Jac said “I’m proud I completed the work placement and am happy that I’ve had the opportunity to try new things and challenge myself in a new environment. It was such a worthwhile trip and I’m grateful to Catrin Jones and Vi-ability for the opportunity as a Young Ambassador.” Catrin Jones, 5×60 Officer said: “Both Lowri and Jac have been Young Ambassadors for two years now, and have helped run school sports clubs, 5×60 clubs, coached in Primary school sports festivals and helped mentor other young leaders and ambassadors. “They are great role models for younger pupils and this work placement was a great example of what opportunities can come from working hard and showing commitment as a Young Ambassador.”
