BARNARDO’S CYMRU are appealing for people of all backgrounds and walks of life, who can provide a safe and loving home, to consider becoming a foster carer.
Foster placements are particularly needed for teenagers, siblings, children with special needs and those threatened by exploitation.
Jason Baker of the Barnardo’s Cymru Adoption and Fostering Service said: “We are always looking for people with experience of teenagers as many of the young people we work with are teens and pre-teens.”
“It may be that someone has seen their own children grow up and leave home, or they may have worked as a teacher, nurse or police officer for instance. We have had people who have retired in their 50s and people looking for a career change. A small number have been through the care system themselves so really understand the child’s perspective.”
Barnardo’s offer excellent packages of training and support for foster carers, as well as generous financial packages and opportunities to work towards becoming a specialist foster carer.
Jason added: “Barnardo’s Cymru offers a bespoke fostering service for some of the more difficult to place children and young people. That may be because they need to be placed with siblings or their previous placement broke down, for instance. Some present risk taking behaviours and are vulnerable to exploitation.
“We are a small team and work closely with our foster carers to find the right child for them and support them. The carers themselves also form a support network so we work together like an extended family.”
