Cannabis user’s mental issues are a ‘warning to others’

A PERSISTENT user of cannabis who developed mental health difficulties was described by a judge as a warning to others about the dangers of the drug.

Christopher Bollard, aged 33, admitted producing cannabis and possessing the drug with intent to supply.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Bollard had numerous previous convictions, including two for possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

The judge at Swansea Crown Court, Mr Recorder Paul Hopkins, told Bollard he had served a prison sentence in the past and could not complain if he now received another.

Bollard, of Morley Street, Carmarthen, was jailed for 10 months, suspended for 18 months, after the judge heard that he was actively engaging with the mental health services.

Craig Jones, prosecuting, said on December 12, 2016, police searched his then home in Sannan Court, Llanfynydd, and found almost 900 grams of drying cannabis.

They then searched a second address in Quay Street, Carmarthen, and found two more quantities of cannabis.

An examination of his mobile telephone revealed messages relating to the supply of the drug.

Bollard’s barrister, John Hipkin, said he had been a heavy user of the drug and got involved in supplying it to help finance his own habit.

“There are mental health issues here and he could not argue if he went to prison today,” added Mr Hipkin.

Mr Recorder Hopkins said Bollard had a chronic problem with cannabis and his mental health problems were a warning to others about the complications of taking the drug.

“Get away from the scourge of cannabis,” he told Bollard.

As part of his sentence Bollard must complete a rehabilitation programme and pay a court surcharge of £140.
