SIMON THOMAS has resigned as a Welsh Assembly Member and quit his party, Plaid Cymru, after being arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: “An individual from Aberystwyth has been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images.
“The individual has been released on police bail for 28 days.”
Mr Thomas, 54, has also deleted his Twitter profile and personal website.
Plaid Cymru has said that there is a police investigation into a ‘serious offence’ ongoing in a statement about his resignation.
Plaid Cymru Chair, Alun Ffred Jones, said: “Plaid Cymru has received Simon Thomas’s resignation as a member of the party.
“We are aware of a police investigation into allegations of a serious offence.
“Due to that ongoing investigation it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
Elin Jones, the Assembly’s Presiding Officer, said: “The Llywydd has received a letter of resignation from Simon Thomas with immediate effect.”
Mr Thomas was an MP for Ceredigion between 2000 and 2005.
Helen Mary Jones AM is in line to replace him, and is considering her options, she’s said.
She posted on Twitter: “In something of a state of shock. I have now got some big decisions to make in the next few days. I won’t be on here a lot. Thanks for good wishes already received.”
