A YOUNG male deer was rescued by RSPCA Cymru officers after getting his antlers badly caught amid rope and fencing.
The charity was alerted after the deer was spotted struggling to set himself free in the Llansadwrn area of Carmarthenshire. Urgent action was required as the deer was ‘slowly choking to death’.
RSPCA animal welfare officer Andrew Harris and inspector Nigel Duguid attended the scene, and carefully manoeuvred the deer so he was pinned within some trees, before cutting the animal free.
The rescue took place on Thursday (Jan 25), and officers say it provides another example” of the dangers which everyday objects can cause wildlife.
Fortunately, after several minutes of getting his breath back, the young male deer recovered from the ordeal and retreated to some nearby woodland.
Andrew Harris, RSPCA animal welfare officer, said: “We’re so relieved we were able to assist this poor deer, who was found in a truly urgent state of need.
“The poor deer was in a right tangle – with his antlers completely caught up, in what is another example as to how everyday objects can cause wildlife immense difficulties.
“We were very concerned, as the deer appeared to be slowly choking to death.
“Fortunately, we were able to safely pin the animal through some trees, before the entangled mess troubling the deer was cut away.
“The deer was shaken by the ordeal, but soon gathered his composure, and caught his breath, before safely retreating to some nearby woodland. We’re just delighted we were able to complete another successful rescue.”
