Christmas Eve call-out for RNLI

THE CREWS of Burry Port’s two lifeboats were called into action in the early hours of Christmas Eve (Dec 24), following reports of a missing person on the nearby coastline.

At 3.50am, Burry Port RNLI was paged to launch by Milford Haven UK Coastguard, to assist a search for a missing person believed to be in the vicinity from Whitford to Worm’s Head, Rhossili.

Both boats were launched, crewed by Rob Davies, Nick Jones, Jared Phillips, Paul Mitchell, Osian Bowen, Paul Williams and Darren Caines. Shore Crew were Mal O’Connell, Rhyds Bowen, Doug Humphreys on his 1st shout, Kev Lloyd, Alun Wells, Roger Bowen, Andrew Pullman and John Jones.

Tenby ALB was launched to head for the Worm, and Burry Port boats were tasked to the Burry Holmes area.

The weather conditions were very poor, with thick, patchy fog which restricted visibility and the ability to manoeuvre in the low tide conditions.

The casualty was spotted on Worms Head, by the light of his mobile phone, and was escorted to safety by the Rhossili Coastguard team.

The casualty displayed symptoms of hypothermia, but was not otherwise physically injured.

All boats returned safely, and the Boathouse was closed at 6am.
