ELIN JONES, Plaid Cymru’s Ceredigion AM, has spoken to senior management at the Post Office company in a bid to raise local concerns over the future of all local Post Office services.
Back in January it was broadcast that Aberystwyth’s historic Post Office in Great Darkgate Street was one set aside for closure in the Post Office’s bid to downgrade over 40 different offices and co-locating them inside other shops. An example of this can be seen in Tregaron, in which uncertainty is reigning over what will become of the sorting office once their Post Office branch moves to the local SPAR.
Elin Jones said: “After the plans to move the Post Office in Aberystwyth were announced, I launched a petition which has gathered hundreds of signatures. I conveyed to Post Office management the strength of feeling locally. The Great Darkgate Street Post Office is an historic building in Aberystwyth, and there’s great opposition to downgrading the service.”
She continued: “While no formal plans are in place yet, it is still the Post Office’s intention to move to share with another shop. I urge the Post Office to take heed of people’s views in the Aberystwyth area.”
“The situation in Tregaron too is unsatisfactory. The consultation on the Post Office’s relocation to the SPAR is coming to an end, with residents none the wiser about what this will mean for the future of the sorting office and its jobs, and what the arrangements will be to pick up parcels,” she concluded.
A public meeting will be held in Aberystwyth regarding the Post Office’s proposals on Friday evening (Mar 4), in which Elin Jones will be a guest speaker.
