Consultation to begin on Ammanford Flood Scheme

NATURAL RESOURCES WALES (NRW) is holding an open consultation on a proposed flood scheme in Ammanford that could reduce flood risk for more than 350 properties in the area.

The scheme, which targets flooding from the rivers Loughor, Marlas and Lash, will use several methods in key locations in an effort to make homes and businesses more resilient to flooding.

NRW is proposing works at Bonllwyn, Aberlash Road, Tir-y-dail and at locations off Dyffryn Road including Gwyn Fryn Estate and Coleg Sir Gar. These areas have all suffered flooding in the past, and climate specialists warn that warmer temperatures caused by climate change will make these periods of extreme weather more likely and more severe in the future.

The scheme proposes building flood defence bunds and walls in several areas of the town as well as installing property level protection measures to some houses on Aberlash Road.

The scheme will also deliver environmental enhancements including tree planting, public seating, information boards and improvements for protected species found during surveys, like otters and bats.

Martyn Evans, head of South West Wales Operations for NRW, said: “Helping to protect communities in Wales from flooding is a cornerstone of our work which is why we have several departments within our organisation working to inform, warn and reduce the risk of flooding wherever we can.

“We also work closely with people and businesses in communities to help them understand the actions they can take to reduce their own risk and the measures they can put in place to increase their properties’ levels of protection.

“The proposed scheme at Ammanford will help safeguard homes and businesses and cut the cost of damage caused during extreme weather events and consultation is a chance for local residents and businesses to give their feedback.”

An online questionnaire is available at https://bit.ly/AmmanfordSurvey or a paper copy can be requested by contacting NRW’s Customer Contact Centre on 0300 065 3000.

NRW will be hosting online presentations going into the details of the scheme on Friday January 8 at 2pm and Tuesday January 12 at  5:30pm. Members of the public can request access to the presentations by emailing [email protected]

Following the public consultation, all responses will be reviewed to help shape the scheme design. A planning application for the scheme is expected to be submitted to Carmarthenshire Council in spring 2021.
