Dramatic rescue at Worm’s Head

RNLI crews from Burry Port and Tenby braved heavy seas and challenging conditions on Saturday (Jul 28) to rescue two people cut off by the tide.

Burry Port RNLI were paged by the Coastguard at around 6.45pm following reports of two people stranded at Worm’s Head, Rhossili.

“With the wind at Force 5, and heavy seas, after some discussion, it was agreed to launch the Atlantic 75 lifeboat, with helmsman Rob Davies, and crewed by Darren Sheppard and Mike Jenkins,” a spokesperson explained.

Due to the weather, Burry Port RNLI’s D Class lifeboat was unable to provide any support, and recovering the casualties by helicopter was also ruled out. As a result, Tenby’s all-weather lifeboat The Hayden Miller was also launched, to stand off and provide safety cover for the Burry Port crew in case of any problems.

Rhossili Coastguard Team were also tasked to the rescue, and were in position near Kitchen Corner to receive the casualties from the Burry Port crew.

The lifeboats rendezvoused near Worm’s Head following a 40-minute voyage in conditions described as ‘fairly challenging’.

Burry Port RNLI extracted the two casualties from the rocks, and they were safely handed over to the Coastguard team.
