Backpacker returns home after sepsis ordeal

AN AMMANFORD backpacker has returned to Carmarthenshire after spending months in hospitals in Thailand and Cambodia.

Calvin Hill, 27, contracted the life-threatening condition sepsis after being bitten by a mosquito while on holiday in Cambodia in May.

He was found unconscious in his hostel by roommates, and spent two weeks in a coma.

Thankfully he came out of the coma when in hospital in Cambodia and regained the ability to move his limbs and talk.

Earlier this month, he was transported to Thailand by a medic plane for further treatment.

Insurers FlexiCover took the decision to fly him to Thailand to avoid putting him at ‘unnecessary risk’, because at the time he was unable to make the long flight home.

His family spent over £8,000 flying to visit him and staying nearby, as well as extending his visa when it ran out.

Mr Hill flew into the country earlier this week, and was transported to Llanelli’s Prince Philip Hospital by ambulance.

His mother told the BBC that he was ‘a lot better’.

“We are so happy,” she added.

“After not seeing him for a while, I was thrilled to see how much progress he has made through all his hard work to pull through this terrible ordeal.

“He is doing really well.”
