Drink driver represents herself

BELINDA JAYNE DAVIES from Gwynfe Road in Ffairfach pleaded guilty to failing to provide specimen for analysis at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on March 12. Prosecuting, Ellie Morgan, told the court that the police received a call from a member of the public at 2pm on February 11, saying that a driver was slumped over the wheel of her car on a road. The caller was unsure whether the driver was drunk or unwell.

When the police arrived, the engine of the car was still running. The defendant’s eyes struggled to fix on the officer, there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from Davies and there was a half-finished bottle of vodka on the passenger seat. When asked, Davies said she had only had ‘one or two’. She would not blow into the breathalyser when asked to do so, but sucked instead, despite the fact that officers continually expressed how to use the equipment. She was brought to the station by the police, where she failed to supply specimen for analysis as she kept pulling the mouth piece away.

Belinda was previously convicted for drink driving in 2004. 59 year-old Davies, who had to represent herself because her lawyer was sick, repeatedly said: “I’m guilty.” She told the court that she had had a panic attack and she could not blow into the breathalyser. She said there was no medical reason for this. When asked by the Magistrates’ clerk what her personal circumstances were, the defendant said she was probably going to lose her husband and her job. She begged: “Please don’t ban me for too long because I might lose my job.” Magistrates banned the defendant from driving for sixteen months and she was ordered to pay the sum of £250 in fines and costs. Davies said:“I wish I could turn the clock back.”
