A ROAD was closed in Machynys this morning (Oct 7) as firefighters tackled a blaze at 3K Engineering following reports of an apparent explosion, which left one man in hospital.

Emergency services were at the scene including the fire service, Dyfed-Powys Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service.

Police were preventing shoppers at the nearby Lidl from exiting the car park and there were reports of nearby properties being evacuated as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police was called to an incident at 3K Engineering in Machynys Road, Llanelli at approx. 9.15am this morning. A gas bottle had exploded, and a man sustained a minor facial injury. He has been conveyed to Morriston hospital for treatment.

“The scene has now been released. The premises and area have been declared safe, and people have been allowed to return.

“The Fire Service were also at the scene, and in the interests of safety, they recommended a cordon of 200 metres be placed around the premises. This also involved evacuating 3K Engineering and nearby premises, which includes a supermarket and a doctors surgery. Everybody evacuated were safe, and made their own arrangements until it was safe for them to return. This is not a residential area, and therefore no residential area was evacuated.

“The emergency services remained at the scene and continued to monitor the situation until it was absolutely safe.

“Chief Inspector Amanda Diggens said: ‘We worked closely with our partners managing this incident, and the priority was to ensure the safety of everybody in the area. I would like to thank all those evacuated for their efficient response and understanding. We are also grateful to those outside the cordon for their patience and co-operation whilst the incident was ongoing, and appreciate that this caused unavoidable inconvenience. ‘”

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that crews from Llanelli, Gorseinon and Tumble attended a fire at the mentioned property at 09:15am this morning, Friday 07/10/2016.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatuses, two hose reel jets and two thermal imaging cameras.”
