NATURAL RESOURCES WALES (NRW) will continue to work over the weekend to co-ordinate the response to the oil spill that occurred in Nant y Caws, Carmarthenshire earlier this week.

NRW is working closely with Valero, the company responsible for the work being carried out to fix the pipeline and for clearing up the kerosene that’s entered the Nant Piwbr.

At least 60,000 litres of the oil has already been recovered from the river, and specialist contractors will continue to remove the remaining oil over the coming days.

Aneurin Cox, South Wales Operational Resources Manager, Natural Resources Wales said: “Our rivers provide a home to rich, diverse and valuable species of plants and animals so it’s important to deal with pollution as quickly as possible.

“Our staff will continue to monitor the site over the weekend as part of our work to investigate the environmental impact of the incident.

“We’ll also continue to respond to queries from local residents and talk to local farmers and angling clubs.

“If anyone sees dead fish or any wildlife in distress, or has any information about the incident please report this on our incident hotline on 0300 065 3000.”

Welsh Water has confirmed that there is no impact on their drinking water supplies.

Officers are continuing to work closely with Carmarthenshire County Council, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Public Health Wales, Dyfed-Powys Police and other partner agencies to minimise the impact on people and the environment.
