Former AM pleads guilty to making indecent images of children

SIMON THOMAS, the former Plaid Cymru AM, has pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children this morning (Oct 3).

Appearing at Aberystwyth Justice Centre, he admitted making over 600 indecent images of children.

150 images were in the most serious category A, with 103 in Category B, and 359 in category C.

Representing Mr Thomas, Richard Williams told the bench that Mr Thomas accepted all of the charges and, while a technical issue arose in relation to the phrasing of one charge that was only an academic point that did not affect his client’s guilty plea.

The case was adjourned for four weeks for the preparation of a full pre-sentence report when it will return to Mold Magistrates’ Court.

All options for sentencing are available, including the possibility that Magistrates will decline jurisdiction and send the case to the Crown Court.

Following his arrest, Mr Thomas resigned immediately as an Assembly Member and from Plaid Cymru.

He was replaced as regional AM by Helen Mary Jones.
