Llandeilo’s updated Past and Present

THE WEBSITE for historic Llandeilo town, ‘Llandeilo Past and Present’, has had a redesign, leaving it optimised for being used on the go on a mobile device.

Created by Llandeilo-based web developer Andy Mabbutt and local historian Terry Norman, the newly designed website contains information on everything from local veteran trees to the Llandeilo workhouse’s punishment book.

Llandeilo Past and Present, which is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative historical town websites in the country, has been completely rewritten in a bid to provide full and easier access to people roaming on 3G and 4G connections on their mobile devices.

Andy Mabbutt, Site Developer at Pontbren Web Services, said: “When the initial site was created, the iPhone had not yet been invented and the majority of visitors would have been using desktop computers connected to the internet through a fixed phone line.

“Today as many as half of our visitors are using mobile technologies. If we fail to provide a good user experience, they will go elsewhere.”

The website’s text and images are now able to be adjusted to the screen size of each individual device for optimum readability. The typography has been considerably improved and the site has been made three times faster.

It is hoped that the new site will be a huge benefit to the town’s visitors who would like to learn more about its fascinating history.

On the website, there is information all about Llandeilo’s famous bridge, the influence of the Dynevor dynasty and 19th century history as told through the diaries of a local cabinet-maker.

A lengthy section focusing on local archaeology covers everything from the pre-historical and Roman periods all the way through to the 20th century. Included on the website are the histories of the Llandeilo and Llandyfeisant Churches, as well as a detailed guided walk highlighting the different points of interest in the town.

The website has been designed to be highly accessible to people of all abilities, and its navigation can be controlled through touch, keyboard and mouse. The website has been researched and redesigned by Terry and Andy without any public funding, grants or sponsorship.
