Following open days on May 23 and 27, Ysynau Uchaf and Abermangoed farm, which are on the Dolaucothi estate in Pumpsaint will be put up to tender, with the lease beginning in October.

A spokesperson for the National Trust said: “The right person will play a pivotal role within the farming community at Dolaucothi where there are opportunities to become involved in the ground-breaking Dolaucothi Lamb scheme – a pioneering initiative set up by the National Trust tenant farmers in 2003 that sees their branded lamb sold exclusively at Sainsburys stores across the UK.

“The vision for both Ynysau Uchaf and Abermangoed Farm, which are available to let separately, is to demonstrate that farming with high conservation standards can be achieved in a sustainable way, benefiting wildlife, landscape, the local community and visitors whilst also producing quality local produce.”

General Manager for National Trust Carmarthenshire, Jacqui Kedward said: “We would like to acknowledge all the hard work done by our outgoing tenants and indeed wish them well.

“Now that these tenancies have come to an end the National Trust has the opportunity to revisit the way we manage our farmland. Our vision is for land and landscape that is healthy, beautiful, rich in culture and nature, enjoyable –and productive as a result.

“Under the National Trust’s Land Outdoors and Nature programme we have reviewed the farm in terms of both farming and nature conservation. Whilst Ynysau and Abermangoed are well-managed farms with plenty of conservation and indeed cultural interest given the Roman heritage in Pumsaint, it is our intention to keep it a sustainable farming unit.

“It is not often that farming tenancies come up on the Dolaucothi Estate and this will be a great opportunity for someone to work with the National Trust to ensure that the best decisions are made for farming, nature, access and wildlife and for the future of both Ynysau Uchaf and Abermangoed Farm.”
