A £1.8 million scheme to improve Wind Street and Tirydail junction in Ammanford has been given the thumbs up just months after opening.
The new roundabout has significantly helped ease congestion after it replaced the old four-way traffic light system in March this year.
Carmarthenshire County Council, who secured the funding through the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund, say the improved layout has also boosted the town’s long term regeneration plans.
This week council officers and executive board members visited the site and met with contractors to see first-hand how the new scheme has benefited motorists, businesses and Ammanford residents.
The council’s executive board member for environment, Cllr Hazel Evans said: “We worked hard to secure this significant amount of funding for the new scheme which I’m pleased to say has had a huge impact in reducing traffic congestion problems that have been an issue in the town for many years.
On visiting the site today I’ve no doubt that this system has not only made it easier for people to access key businesses, but will encourage more visitors in to the town and surrounding areas and support the its wider regeneration plans.”
Last week the council announced a £200k investment to transform two buildings in Ammanford and bring them back into commercial use.
The former Kings Diner on Park Street and Lloyds Bank on Quay Street will undergo major refurbishment, which will provide commercial employment space, with a potential of creating over 20 jobs.
