Man to appear in court over historical sex abuse

A MAN arrested in connection with Operation Almond, an investigation into allegations of physical and sexual abuse of children in Carmarthen, is set to appear in court tomorrow (Jun 15).

61-year-old Robert David Hughes, from Carmarthen, will appear in Llanelli Magistrates Court, charged with 9 offences of indecent assault and 3 offences of attempt indecent assault.

The offence locations were in the Carmarthen and Hereford area. 4 people were arrested in relation to the investigation.

The operation focused on allegations made in 2000, and also in 2012, about abuse during the years spanning 1976 to 1986.

In relation to the 2000 allegations, these were fully investigated at the time and referred to the Crown Prosecution Service; however no criminal proceedings were instigated at that time.

In 2012, further allegations were made, which included a report of abuse at a care home, namely Cartref-y-Gelli in Carmarthen, between 1986 and 1990.

In 2015, police stressed that it was important to note that all allegations made concerned members of staff who no longer work at Rhydygors School, and Cartref-y-Gelli care home had been closed for a number of years.
