Man launched ‘disgraceful assault’ on pensioner in supermarket

A PENCADER man has received a suspended prison sentence for attacking a pensioner inside a supermarket.

Gareth Davies, aged 56, was said to have had a long standing grudge against 68-year-old Francis Evans.

And when he spotted him inside a Spar store in Llandysul he launched an unprovoked assault, thumping him nine times and leaving him on the floor bleeding.

Davies, of Maes y Berllan, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for 10 months, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of community work.

Davies was also ordered to pay £2,500 to Mr Evans in compensation.

Dyfed Thomas, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court how Davies walked into the store on March 25 last year with his three-year-old grand daughter by his side.

He saw Mr Evans and attacked him, despite his grand daughter seeing the violence.

Davies left him on the floor while he went to a counter and asked Sarah James, an assistant, to check his lottery ticket before calmly walking out.

Mr Evans suffered bone fractures to his eye socket and nose.

Davies’ barrister, James Hartson, said he accepted it had been shameful and disgraceful behaviour.

Davies’ had held a grudge against Mr Evans, he said, for more than 10 years and on seeing him by chance lost his temper.

Judge Geraint Walters said it was disgraceful assault in front of a child.

He issued a lifelong retraining order banning Davies from contacting Mr Evans.
