Mental health group’s funding boost

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 14.59.11A CARMARTHENSHIRE group, which works with young people who have mental health problems, has receive funding from a national charity.

West Wales Action for Mental Health has been awarded £6,720 by BBC Children in Need to offer support for children and young people facing mental health challenges in Carmarthen and around west Wales. The news comes as the charity announces the projects across the UK that have been successful in their funding applications in the latest small grants round.

The project works with children and young people who are experiencing mental health problems. The charity offers support to young people who do not have a diagnosis but have experienced ongoing difficulties with their mental health, and also those who have been diagnosed with such difficulties as depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, eating disorders and personality disorder.

The additional funding will be used to provide a series of workshops in collaboration with Arts4wellbeing for children and young people in order to improve their emotional wellbeing, increase their sense of achievement, and improve their self-belief.

BBC Children in Need now funds 12 projects in Carmarthenshire with over £602,861 hard at work to benefit young lives in the region. The Charity awards grants at seven points during the year, more funding will be pledged to projects in the UK throughout 2016.

Speaking of the grant, Angie Darlington at West Wales Action for Mental Health said: “The organisation is dedicated to promoting and teaching wellbeing and encouraging early intervention and recovery in individuals of all ages, especially the young who are experiencing mental health issues.

“The funding from BBC Children in Need will enable the charity to continue support with workshops to empower the children and young people to learn new skills, have fun and develop a closer connection to their community.”

These include anything up to £10,000 across one year and can really demonstrate how relatively small sums of money can have a huge impact. BBC Children in Need funds two types of grants; both of which are open to new applicants. A Small Grants Programme includes grants up to and including £10,000, which supports projects for one year, while the Main Grants Programme is for grants over £10,000 per year to support projects for up to three years.
